During my recent speaking engagements, I received a number of queries regarding digital media accessibility for users with hearing impairments. This week Ars Technica reported the introduction of new legislation that would extend closed captioning to “some Internet video.”
Web Browser for Autistic Boy
A number of people brought to my attention the story of John LeSieur, who developed the Zac Browser in honor of his grandson Zackary. Zackary has autism, a little-understood affliction that affects cognition, so LeSieur created a browser to provide such content as educational games, soothing images and entertainment.
Virtual Worlds and People with Disabilities
In the interest of more fully understanding virtual worlds, I’ve been doing some reading about the way users respond to their avatars, how simulations impact the user experience, and what connection may exist to Anikto’s core values. Interestingly, there is much to be gleaned about the issues of identity and expression among users who have disabilities.
