Yesterday came the announcement of a new standard for authoring multimedia presentations using sound, video, images and text. The Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, known as SMIL 3.0 offers users accessibility options as well.

Thursday night I was speaking to a very excellent group of folks at PhillyCHI about web accessibility, and a question came up regarding the accessibility of rich internet applications. I kind of fudged my response, because the topic is fairly broad, so I’m going to explore some concepts here as a follow-up.

Darren Lunn, a third year PhD student from the Human Centred Web Lab Research School of Computer Science, has introduced a framework that seeks to bind Semantic Web technologies with specific visual structures to accurately transcode across a diverse range of web content vehicles.
