Recent and Upcoming Publications — Virtual Accessibility
The word is out on the economic and social value of virtual environments among people with disabilities, as well as the importance of providing barrier-free digital experiences for all users. Anikto is humbled and proud to be a participant in this conversation through a number of publication vehicles.
First, a great deal of thanks must go to the organizers of the Unitech2010 Conference in Oslo, Norway. Threats of ash clouds and British Airways strikes derailed travel plans; however, tremendous efforts on behalf of Frode Eika Sandnes provided an opportunity to present via video conference. After a dry-run rehearsal the day before, everything went splendidly and without a hitch.
All the conference proceedings were put into a 297-page book and published through Tapir University Press. Topics cover such interesting areas as Universal Design, mobile health care, behavioral studies, ergonomics, cinema for the visually impaired (!), the usefulness of text-size changing links and computer-human interaction for people with Parkinson’s disease. Anikto was honored to contribute a chapter on the use of virtual worlds among people with disabilities.

June saw the release of Anikto’s article in UX Magazine for the Usability Professionals’ Association. The issue explores topics related to accessibility, readability and barrier-free experiences. Among the authors represented are such rockstars as Clayton Lewis, Caroline Jarrett, Shawn Lawton Henry and Kate Walser, among many others.
Finally, a great a time was had by all who attended the Society for Disability Studies 2010 conference in Philadelphia. Anikto presented on the business rationale for inclusively designed virtual environments, emphasizing the economic potential of the disability demographic and drawing from practical examples. It’s always a great pleasure to speak to folks whose lives depend upon assistive technology, so much thanks go to the wonderful Pratik Patel and others for organizing this event.
And that’s not all! There are some exciting developments in the works, so watch this space for the latest on digital media and the pursuit of accessibility.
