Dusan - thank you for commenting. I am familiar with Virtual Ability and in fact have communicated with Alice Krueger while undergoing my research. She is an inspiring presence.

There's significant work that has been done in Second Life in particular for those with disabilities, and to ensure accessibility. Much of that work comes from individual developers who are able to work with the open source viewer to create various approaches.

In particular, I'll point you to Virtual Ability Inc. which has documented many of the interfaces available and provides assistance to users through their group.

http://virtualability.org/default.aspx

There are, for example, blind users in Second Life using haptic interfaces and other plug-ins and extensions.

This is NOT to say that there isn't still a lot of work to do. Some of the challenges are very unique, obviously, to a 3D environment.

If you'd like more information, I'd strongly recommend getting in touch with the folks at Virtual Ability noted above.
