iTunes 8.1 Released With Accessibility Enhancements
This week Apple released version 8.1 of their popular music downloading and playback application, iTunes. This version claims to be faster when working with and syncing large libraries to your iPod or iPhone, and the press release specifically mentions “enhanced” accessibility.
It’s difficult to get a sense of what accessibility features have been enhanced. The iTunes website mentions that libraries can be interfaced with VoiceOver in Mac OS X and Window-Eyes for XP and Vista. Closed captioning features are supported for video playback.
Since release version 8, iTunes has reported speech engine synthesis and full keyboard control for Windows users who updated to GW-Micro Window-Eyes 7 on Service Pack 3. The iTunes Store reportedly uses headers, links and accessible form controls. If anyone with experience using iTunes with assistive technology has noticed a significant upgrade, please feel free to chime in with your thoughts.
